Philosophy

Our teaching style is thorough, but stress free. There will be an evaluation after the dive where you will critique your performance and we will assist you in identifying a way for you to correct deficiencies we may find.  When you take a tech class or any scuba class from us, we will strive to make the atmosphere casual, fun and relaxed.

Our philosophy on gear configuration is that it must be a properly configured technical diving rig. We will look at your current configuration and if it meets standards and is safe you will be able to use it in the courses. If we see things that can be made more efficient, for a tech diving environment we will assist you in making those changes.

Awareness is one of the key components of a safe technical diver. During training you will be challenged to perform several different things at once. You will be task loaded by the very nature of the training. For instance tracking gas pressure, running reels, light management, controlling buoyancy & trim, keeping pace with team members, and meeting training goals are just a few of the things that will be going on all at once.
With all of these things going on at once, we will also expect you to be aware of your surroundings, your orientation to things such as the ascent line, the exit line, your teammates, your gear, and not just simply completing the task at hand.  We also hope to acquire muscle memory during the courses. Muscle memory is developed through repetition and practice. For instance during a gas sharing exercise, I will expect that you can perform the task and I will ask you to do it many times throughout your training. At some point in the training process I hope that gas sharing becomes second nature.   The same muscle memory will be developed for buoyancy, trim, and performing many other tasks at technical diver level.  If, after course completion, you still struggle with buoyancy, body positioning, global awareness or your emotions, you are not adequately prepared to tech dive.  We continue working with you until you reach this standard.
Complacency is one of the tech divers' worst enemies. We will discuss complacency, identify some of the things that tech divers can become complacent about and help you develop the attitude that will prevent you from being complacent. We will work on developing a routine in preparation for a tech dive.  We will try to instill the habit of being 100% prepared mentally, physically, and gear wise before you enter the water.
Dive planning is a very important aspect of a successful tech dive. Technical dives are planned down to the last detail. Who is doing what, when and how? A tech dive can have lots of transitions where the team changes the pace and changes the activity during the dive. Transitions are very important.  Often it is during these transitions that team members get out of harmony with one another. You learn how to manage these transitions through proper prior planning and increasing awareness.

At the Intro to Tech level, it is expected that you will start developing awareness and muscle memory. Our goal is to help guide you in knowing how to perform tasks and then to perform them repetitively so you start developing your muscle memory, and your awareness. The Intro to Tech course develops the foundation for all of your future tech diving. We will strive to make it a solid foundation of skills, attitude, awareness, gear configuration, and mindset tech diving environment.

Our course fees (hyperlink) are posted, they are not the lowest fees that you will find, nor are they much higher than other instructors.   No short cuts are taken in our teaching. We take the time to make sure that you are a competent diver when you graduate, and somebody that we would like to dive with.  If you are interested in price alone then our classes may not be for you.  Think about the amount of coaching and in-water training that is included in our courses, you will find our price structure is a great value.

We understand that safe divers need to be comfortable in the water and competent scuba skills are built on supervised practice time.  You can also expect a high level of personal involvement from us with your training.  We will assist you in meeting compatible fellow divers, finding suitable and safe introductory tech dive locations and helping you to begin your future diving career.

Lastly, we actually do the “real dives” for fun as well as teaching, this means that we are constantly using and practicing the techniques we will pass on to our students.
